We may have seen her in a ton of fantastic and widely diverse movies playing strong, complex characters, but Nicole Kidman has always been a private person in her personal life. This is why, when the Big Little Lies actress commented on her career so far and her marriage to Tom Cruise in a recent interview, we were all surprised. And curious.
A Decades-Long Career on Screen
Nicole started acting at the age of 14 and hasn’t left the spotlight since. She’s been in movies that have since been considered classics like The Hours, Moulin Rouge!, and Eyes Wide Shut, as well as her more recent work on Grace of Monaco, HBO’s Big Little Lies, and another HBO original, The Undoing, which is premiering at the end of October. The most important aspect of a role, she says, is the exploration of the human condition, of one’s identity and what drives them. She goes after roles that are in some way challenging and push her outside of her comfort zone.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s Marriage
While talking about erotic boldness in filmmaking and how that has affected her career, Kidman recalled her work with Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut, where nudity was part of the narrative. Playing alongside her then-husband in real-life Tom Cruise was also part of the narrative. Since they played a couple in the movie, many speculated it was the story of infidelity and betrayal that triggered their divorce. Nicole denies it with a smile.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were married for 11 years from 1990 until they split in 2001 and share two kids together. They shot the movie for nearly two years from November 1996 until June 1998. Kidman recalls working with Kubrick wasn’t at all torturous. He was a great man, and she learned a lot from him. As for Tom, Nicole says that they “were happily married” behind the camera, and they weren’t affected by the script of the movie. They would even go go-kart racing at three in the morning after some of the heavy scenes.
The actress has been married to singer Keith Urban since 2006, with whom she has two children. She looks the happiest she’s ever been.
