The British royal family is vast and full of curious characters everyone wants to know more about. They employ very large staff ranging from chauffeurs and maids to butlers and chefs, and every now and then, we get to hear about the outrageous demands and rules some royals have. Recently, a number of servants have started coming forward about what’s really going on behind the palace walls.

This Royal Family Member Was Particularly Difficult

Queen Elizabeth II’s late younger sister, Princess Margaret, was often referred to by her staff as “Her Rude Highness” because of how she treated her servants. Peter Russell, who was a palace aide for 14 years between 1954 and 1968, recalls she was quite difficult and often had maddening demands. She’d use her staffers as human ashtrays, so someone had to constantly follow her around with an ashtray since she couldn’t be bothered to do it herself. Some say Margaret was rude to her mother — the Queen Mother — too.

The Prince of Wales, as he is formally known, is Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son and heir to the throne. His aides have dubbed him “The Pampered Prince” because of how demanding and meticulous he is. The future king would often scold his entire staff if just one person made a mistake. In the Amazon documentary, Serving the Royals: Inside the Firm, former staffers share curious details about how everything is done for Prince Charles, from pressing his shoelaces every day to squeezing an inch of toothpaste onto his toothbrush each morning.

Several aids have said that the absolute favorite of all royal staffers is Prince Philip, the Queen’s husband. The Crown’s Matt Smith, who played the Duke of Edinburgh, said he’s spoken to some royal aids who’ve all told him Prince Philip is the one they love the most. Smith thinks it’s because “he’s a bit more of a man of the people” than the rest of the royal family members.
