Alaskan Wolf Remembers His Savior Years After Being Rescued

Years ago, a prospector was looking for gold along Coho Creek when he stumbled on a massive Alaskan timber wolf caught in a trap. The trap had been set up by a man who had died the previous week.

The animal was seemingly in distress and if this luck encounter hadn’t occurred it would have most likely died.

The Wolf’s Life Wasn’t the Only Thing at Stake

The prospector couldn’t leave the wolf to suffer. He approached the trapped animal, which seemed confused and frightened. When the wolf backed away, he noticed it was a female and that her teats were full of milk. He instantly understood that the animal had a den with hungry pups waiting for her to feed and look after them.

From her appearance, he assumed that the animal had been trapped for only a few days. That meant that her pups were most likely alive and in close proximity since mother wolves rarely travel too far from their dens.

Finding the Pups Wasn’t Easy

He knew that the wolf would turn on him if he released her. Instead, the prospector chose to find the pups. He found tracks in the snow that led him to the den a half-a-mile away. Knowing that wolf pups are shy and cautious, he imitated the high-pitched squeak of a mother wolf to call them outside.

After several attempts, four tiny pups, no older than a few weeks, appeared. They started suckling on his fingers, which is when he took them one by one and placed them in a burlap bag.

When he returned to the mother wolf, she immediately stood up erect, scenting her young. The prospector released the pups, which within seconds were slurping at her belly. He spent the next few days earning her trust by bringing her food.

After a while, the animal allowed the prospector to free her from her trap. Four years later, the man returned to the site. After making a few howling sounds, the mother wolf appeared wiggling her tail slightly to show that she remembers her rescuer and left!
