With the reality of current events and the ongoing health crisis, many youngsters were deprived of a pivotal moment in any student’s life — their prom. This makes the news that Netflix is resuming post-production on its original musical The Prom much anticipated, and it’s even more amazing that director Ryan Murphy released the official cast list just last week. Yes, the queen of screens Meryl Streep will be there as Dee Dee Allen, as well as Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Awkwafina, and many other Broadway talents.
The Prom — A Smash-Hit Broadway Production
The Netflix original is largely based on the widely successful 2018 Broadway production of the same name. The six-time Tony Award-winning musical was based on Jack Viertel’s original concept, and it features lyrics and music from Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar respectively.
In a small conservative town in Indiana, two lesbian students are denied going to their high school prom because of their professed love for one another. The press gets wind of the story, and it attracts the attention of Broadway Stars Dee Dee Allen (played by Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (portrayed by James Corden), who see it as an opportunity to get some positive publicity by helping out the lovebirds.

Since the pandemic put production to a halt in March, it was uncertain when and if it would be resumed any time this year. Although it’s early for Netflix to release a trailer, the online streaming giant has at least given us a release date. You can stream The Prom starting from December 11th. Not a bad pre-Christmas release to get you in the holiday spirit, eh?
